From there, I got on the subway and headed home.<\/p>\n<p><span>Outside<\/span> the bus station, I saw this:\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"wsite-image wsite-image-border-hairline wsite-image-border-black\" style=\"padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center\"> <a> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/yule-tide.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/1372275449.jpg\" alt=\"Picture\" style=\"width:auto;max-width:100%\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<div style=\"display:block;font-size:90%\">Bus seen at Seoul Express Bus Terminal, June 24th, 2013. &#8220;Welcome UN Korean War Veterans&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">June 25th, the anniversary day of the start of the war, was only two days away. <\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>The English on the banner is: <font size=\"3\"><strong>&#8220;Welcome UN Korean War Veterans&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><br \/><span>The Korean on the banner is: <\/span><font size=\"3\"><strong>&#8220;\ud658\uc601 &#8212; 6-25\uc804\uc7c1 UN\ucc38\uc804\uc6a9\uc0ac \ubc29\ud55c&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p><span><strong><font size=\"3\"><font size=\"2\">(1) <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\">\ud658\uc601<\/font>:<\/strong> <em>Welcome<\/em><\/span><br \/><span><font size=\"3\"><strong><font size=\"2\">(2) <\/font>6-25\uc804\uc7c1<\/strong><\/font> (\uc721\uc774\uc624\uc804\uc7c1)<strong>:<\/strong><em> &#8220;Six-Two-Five War&#8221;<\/em>. [This is the name most commonly used in South Korea for this war, because it began on June 25th. I&#8217;ve always thought that to be a strange way to name a war, after it&#8217;s starting date. I can&#8217;t think of an example of that from Western history. They also use the term &#8220;Korean War&#8221;, but less commonly. Every Korean knows what &#8220;6-25&#8221; means, but <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/m.koreaherald.com\/view.php?ud=20130623000213&#038;ntn=0\">most 7th-12th grade students <strong>don&#8217;t know<\/strong><\/a> that it was June 25th of<strong> 1950<\/strong>!<\/span>]<br \/><span><font size=\"3\"><strong><font size=\"2\">(3) <\/font>UN\ucc38\uc804<\/strong><\/font>: <em>Participation in the War by the United Nations<\/em><\/span><em> [UN]<\/em><br \/><span><font size=\"3\"><strong><font size=\"2\">(4) <\/font>\uc6a9\uc0ac:<\/strong><\/font> <em>Brave Men; Heroes<\/em><\/span><br \/><span><strong><font size=\"2\">(5)<\/font> <font size=\"3\">\ubc29\ud55c<\/font><\/strong>: <em>Visit (for Pleasure?) to Korea<\/em><\/span><em><span><\/span><\/em>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"styled-hr\" style=\"width:100%;\">\n<div style=\"height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">It&#8217;s unclear who was supposed to be riding that bus pictured above, but on Tuesday (June 25th), I did see this:\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"wsite-image wsite-image-border-thin \" style=\"padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center\"> <a> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/yule-tide.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/5084813_orig.jpg\" alt=\"Picture\" style=\"width:100%;max-width:1024px\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<div style=\"display:block;font-size:90%\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">I noticed that the caption writer wrongly wrote<strong> &#8220;North Korea began the war 60 years ago today&#8221;<\/strong>. Actually, it was 63 years ago today, on June 25th, 1950. This is June 25th, 2013. The very same newspaper <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/m.koreaherald.com\/view.php?ud=20130623000213&#038;ntn=0\">reported<\/a>, the day before, that 37% of adults and 53% of teenagers did not know which year the war began. The day after, a member of that 37% must&#8217;ve been at the editor&#8217;s desk!\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"styled-hr\" style=\"width:100%;\">\n<div style=\"height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">Something interesting from the Korean language:<br \/><span><\/span><br \/><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><strong style=\"\">\ucc38\uc804<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong><em style=\"\">Participation in the(\/a) War<\/em><br \/><strong style=\"\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \uc6a9\uc0ac:<\/strong> <em style=\"\">Brave Men; Heroes<\/em><br \/><span><\/span><br \/><span><\/span>Combining those two words, i.e, &#8220;<strong style=\"\">\ucc38\uc804 <\/strong><strong style=\"\">\uc6a9\uc0ac<\/strong>&#8221; (cham-juhn-yong-sa) equals the word <strong style=\"\">&#8220;veteran(s)&#8221;<\/strong>, I see from my (still-<a style=\"\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/yuletide5142.weebly.com\/1\/post\/2013\/04\/xpost-22-phone-birthday.html\">working<\/a>)  cell-phone dictionary. It&#8217;s not just a &#8220;participating in a war&#8221; thing,  but a &#8220;bravery&#8221;\/&#8221;heroic&#8221; component. This is not the case in English.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/veteran\">Etymology<\/a> of the word &#8220;veteran&#8221; in English:<em> &#8220;<font size=\"2\"><span style=\"\"><span style=\"\"><\/span><\/span><\/font>1495\u20131505; \u00a0&lt; Latin  veter\u0101nus \u00a0mature, experienced.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>I wonder what the word in English for &#8220;participant in a former war&#8221; was before somebody grabbed the Latin word.\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coming back from Osan on Sunday, we were dropped off at Seoul Express Bus Terminal, which is near Gangnam.
