Lee <\/span>was actually a  monster with an<em style=\"\">&#8220;<\/em><em style=\"\">appalling record of treason, racism, hatred, and dishonor&#8221;<\/em>. (Americans tend to think of Lee as a Southern Gentleman <em>par excellence<\/em>. Even those who dislike the CSA, or even dislike the South itself, respect and revere General Lee.)<\/p>\n<p><span>Schachter claims that better names would be <\/span><em>&#8220;James Armistead Lafayette, Mary Elizabeth Boswer, William Harvey Carney,  Barbara Johns, Maggie Walker [or] Oliver Hill&#8221;<\/em>. All no-names. <\/p>\n<p>Some Googling reveals that every single one of those alternates is Black. I highly doubt <em>John Schachter<\/em> is Black. (Here is what <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.surnamedb.com\/Surname\/Schachter#ixzz2bxlrCE7i\">some Internet site<\/a> says about that particular surname: &#8220;[The name Schachter] <em>was apparently often Ashkenasic, and used  specifically to describe a [kosher] ritual slaughterer. The derivation is  understood to be from the Hebrew &#8216;shachet&#8217; meaning to slaughter<\/em>.&#8221;) An actual Black guy, an NAACP leader from Arlington, opposes the idea.<\/p>\n<p>This story is as if it were designed just to prove post-122&#8217;s point about <a style=\"\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/yuletide5142.weebly.com\/1\/post\/2013\/08\/post-122-school-names-in-south-korea-vs-the-usa.html\">politically-correct school names<\/a> in Arlington.<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;\">\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">Here is the article:\n<\/div>\n<blockquote style=\"text-align:left;\"><p> \t\t\t\tIt\u2019s been an Arlington institution for nearly 90 years. But is it time to change the name of Washington-Lee High School? \/ \t\t\t         \t \t\t\t\tJohn Schachter thinks so, although it likely will be an uphill, perhaps quixotic, battle to remove the Civil War general\u2019s name. \/ Schachter, who can see the high school from his 21st-story  condominium unit nearby, used the citizen-comment period of the Aug. 8  School Board meeting to say Lee\u2019s name (though not Washington\u2019s) should  be removed from the school. \/                                      <strong>Lee deserves \u201cno positive recognition for his  appalling record,\u201d a record that includes \u201ctreason, racism, hatred and  dishonor,\u201d <\/strong>Schachter told School Board members. \/ \u201cLee deserves no honor for fighting on the wrong side for the wrong cause,\u201d he said. \/                                      Schachter asked board members to establish a  committee to \u201cright this egregious wrong\u201d and come up with an alternate  name for the school, whose history dates to the early 1920s. [<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sungazette.net\/arlington\/education\/so-far-limited-interest-in-dropping-robert-e-lee-s\/article_485b98e8-028a-11e3-b46d-001a4bcf887a.html\">Article Continues<\/a>]<br \/><span style=\"\"><\/span> \t\t\t<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"> <span>Obviously Schachter meant the petition as an act of political agitation (against anyone who holds Lee in any esteem, which is, I think, the majority of Americans). <\/span>Schachter probably lives in a mental fantasy-land in which he imagines himself brave or heroic for being obnoxious. \n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"styled-hr\" style=\"width:100%;\">\n<div style=\"height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<em style=\"\">Was <\/em>Lee a &#8220;traitor&#8221;? \n<\/div>\n<p>  <span class=\"imgPusher\" style=\"float:right;height:0px\"><\/span><span style=\"z-index:10;position:relative;float:right;;clear:right;margin-top:0px;*margin-top:0px\"><a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/yule-tide.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/7004.jpg?155\" style=\"margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 0px; border-width:1px;\" alt=\"Picture\" class=\"galleryImageBorderBlack\"><\/a><span style=\"display: block; font-size: 90%; margin-top: -10px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: center;\">A Pair of Traitors<\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;display:block;\">It&#8217;s true that he fought  against the USA despite swearing an oath to it. That was after resigning his commission in the U.S. Army, though.  George Washington himself did the same<span>: <\/span>He swore loyalty to the British   Empire. He broke that oath&#8230;and pretty dramatically&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The  question about Lee&#8217;s &#8220;treason&#8221; becomes the tricky and unresolvable one of whether the  States,  or the USA itself, were the primary unit(s) of political identity in America.<\/p>\n<p>A  strong case could be made that Lee would&#8217;ve been <em style=\"\">even more <\/em>of  a traitor even if he&#8217;d stayed in the U.S. Army and led the invasion of Virginia, his home state.  Ironically, Lee opposed secession personally, I&#8217;ve read. Yet Virginia had voted to secede. It was done.
