An odd, vaguely-eerie, orangish glow.<\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>The real-time pollution-board, which stands at a busy local intersection, confirmed it. It showed <\/span><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arb.ca.gov\/html\/brochure\/pm10.htm\">PM-10<\/a> air pollution levels to be through the roof, at 200-some micrograms per cubic meter of air, as I recall. <font size=\"1\">(Normal for Seoul is <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheet\/pub?hl=en_GB&#038;key=0AonYZs4MzlZbdG1BdDU0RVI3anhBWFFzZkFraGhEOHc&#038;hl=en_GB&#038;gid=3\">60-70<\/a>. Normal for the Washington, DC area &#8212; my birthplace &#8212; is about 20. The EU declares anything over 50 a health hazard, <font size=\"1\">South-Korea&#8217;s <font size=\"1\">own arbitrary <\/font>safety-thresh<font size=\"1\">old is 100<\/font><\/font>).<\/font><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>This must have been the vaunted &#8220;<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asian_Dust\">Yellow Dust<\/a>&#8220;, blowing in from Central Asia. The then-new guy at work, C., spoke of &#8220;fog&#8221;. Well, Korea doesn&#8217;t have <em>fog<\/em>, I explained. (A foreign editor thinks it&#8217;s &#8220;fog&#8221; <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.blouinnews.com\/blouinbeatworld\/2013\/03\/09\/key-questions-worryingly-open-on-north-korea-nukes\/skorea-nkorea-military-panmunjom\/\">here<\/a>. Note on that photo: I&#8217;m of the belief that the yellow-dust cannot be adequately captured on camera).<br \/><span><\/span><br \/><a title=\"\" style=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.airkorea.or.kr\/airkorea\/eng\/search\/main.jsp?action=monthly&#038;year=&#038;month=&#038;districtName=&#038;stationName=&#038;item=10007&#038;district=031&#038;station=831153\">Air Korea<\/a><span> is a convenient real-time air quality site.<\/span> From it, I took the screenshot at left. Each square is one hour of one day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Green <\/strong>means (by Korean standards) normal air quality. <strong>Blue <\/strong>squares are hours when the air was &#8220;particularly&#8221; (heh) free of particulate-matter. Blues are, I think, associated with rainstorms.<strong> Yellow and<\/strong> <strong>Orange <\/strong>mean the air is getting unhealthy.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>A 72-hour yellow-dust storm is visible on March 7th, 8th, 9th, trailing off before sunrise on the 10th.\n<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;\">\n<div>\n<div style=\"height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"styled-hr\" style=\"width:100%;\">\n<div style=\"height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">I remember my first yellow-dust storm. It was early Spring 2010, a Saturday.  I worked on Saturdays at the time. When I went into work that morning, I  hadn&#8217;t notice anything unusual.
