He was one of the USA&#8217;s foremost experts on European affairs, especially Russian affairs. His wife was Norwegian. He drew up the USA&#8217;s &#8220;containment&#8221; doctrine and the Marshall Plan, essentially laying the groundwork for fifty years of U.S. policy in Europe (which became anachronistic after 1991 but sort continued on in mutated form anyway; I wonder what Kennan thought about the interventions in Yugoslavia? Kosovo? Crimea?).<br \/><span><br \/><span>Kennan<\/span><\/span> was one of the only voices in the U.S. government in 1945 and early 1946 who warned that Stalin was not to be trusted, that Stalin was aggressive and intransigent.<\/p>\n<p> It sounds like Kennan was a &#8220;good old fashioned&#8221; American patriot. <strong>He was not.<\/strong> Recently I read (some of) a book called <em style=\"\">George Kennan: A Study of Character<\/em> by John Lukacs (2007). In it, we see that Kennan actually grew to dislike the USA:<br \/><\/font> <\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"413268462427393017\" align=\"left\" style=\"width: 100%; overflow-y: hidden;\" class=\"wcustomhtml\"> <a name=\"continue\" id=\"continue\"><font color=\"white\">.<\/font><\/a> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center;\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yuletyde.com\/1\/post\/2014\/03\/post-201-george-kennan-and-the-question-of-loyalty-to-a-state.html#continue\"><font size=\"4\"><strong><font color=\"#1600FF\">Read More<\/font><\/strong><\/font><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<div> <!--BLOG_SUMMARY_END--> <\/div>\n<blockquote style=\"text-align:left;\"><p> What [George Kennan] saw [from the 1930s onward]&#8230;was no longer a world of his. He would, because he must, remain loyal to his country. &#8220;But it would be a loyalty <u>despite<\/u>, not a loyalty <u>because<\/u>, <strong>a loyalty of principle, not of identification<\/strong>.&#8221;\u00a0 [quoted text was written by Kennan in the 1960s]\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"> <span><span>This part I found particularly interesting:<br \/><\/span><\/span> <\/div>\n<blockquote style=\"text-align:left;\"><p> He [Kennan] blamed much on the automobile. He found a civilization dependent on automobiles deleterious. He remembered one of his professors in Princeton who explained that railroads, coming into the centers of towns, contributed to the growth of an urban civilization, while the asphalt roads extruding from cities lead to their dissolution. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"> This view of &#8220;an automobile-dependent society as a weak one&#8221; is a view I&#8217;ve held for years. My experience traveling abroad and living\/working abroad has only strengthened this view, to me. Kennan saw this in its embryonic stage. He lived long enough (he continued writing into the the 2000s) to see it in its advanced form. He was right about a lot.\n<\/div>\n<blockquote style=\"text-align:left;\"><p> Still &#8212; whether &#8220;despite&#8221; or &#8220;because&#8221; &#8212; there could be no question of [Kennan&#8217;s] loyalty to the Foreign Service. &#8230;[T]here was, too, a puritanical streak in Kennan&#8217;s character: a categorical imperative of <em style=\"\">duty<\/em>. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"> Kennan did remain loyal to the USA<span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>, of course. This is fascinating to me. What makes a man loyal to a state or other organization? How long till the organization changes for &#8220;the worse&#8221; so much that <strong>loyalty of principle<\/strong> wavers and then breaks? <span><span><br \/><span><br \/><span><\/span><\/span>Fareed Zakaria, U.S. media darling, wags his finger disapprovingly at <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/02\/23\/books\/review\/the-kennan-diaries-by-george-f-kennan.html?_r=0\">recently-revealed comments<\/a> made by Kennan:<br \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/div>\n<blockquote style=\"text-align:left;\"><p> Writing on a flight to Los Angeles in 1978, Kennan thinks about how few white faces he will see when he lands and laments the decline of people&#8230;\u201cfrom whose forefathers the constitutional structure and political ideals of the early America once emerged.\u201d Instead, he predicts, Americans are destined to \u201cmelt into a vast polyglot mass, . . . one huge pool of indistinguishable mediocrity and drabness.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\"> From the little I&#8217;ve seen of Kennan&#8217;s late writings, he probably did steadily lose loyalty to the USA. That is just my own conjecture, though.
