It was sung by the  1930s-and-1940s Country-Western group &#8220;Sons of the Pioneers&#8221;, and wiki  says it <a style=\"\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sons_of_the_Pioneers#Singles\">reached #4<\/a> on the Country charts.<br \/>It contains the following line:<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em><font size=\"3\">&#8220;High on the hill Suribachi&#8230;<br \/><span><\/span>Flies Old Glory, and she always will&#8230;<font size=\"3\">&#8220;<\/font><\/font><\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">&#8220;<strong style=\"\">Suribachi<\/strong>&#8221; is the name of the high hill that physically dominates Iwo Jima Island.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"wsite-image wsite-image-border-hairline wsite-image-border-black\" style=\"padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yule-tide.com\/uploads\/1\/8\/8\/7\/18873606\/6266018_orig.jpeg?438\" rel=\"lightbox\" onclick=\"if (!lightboxLoaded) return false\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yule-tide.com\/uploads\/1\/8\/8\/7\/18873606\/6266018.jpeg?438\" alt=\"Picture\" style=\"width:auto;max-width:100%\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<div style=\"display:block;font-size:90%\">Mt. Every American knows the photo (at right). These <a style=\"\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bobwills.com\/lyrics\/stars_stripes.html\">lyrics<\/a> thus make a &#8216;claim&#8217; to Iwo Jima, proclaiming it <em>&#8220;always will&#8221;<\/em> be U.S. soil.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d assumed it was made a U.S. possession and remains one. <\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>That&#8217;s incorrect. It turns out that Iwo Jima was a U.S. possession for a long time, but was ceremoniously returned to Japan  in mid-1968. But, then, <em>&#8220;High on the hill Suribachi flies Old Glory, and  she will for&#8230;twenty-three years&#8221;<\/em> &#8212; That just wouldn&#8217;t have had as good a ring to  it.\n<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I remembered an old song, as I was writing post-#23, called &#8220;Stars and Stripes on Iwo Jima&#8221;.
