I witnessed my own troop&#8217;s decline  as an institution. The troop actually folded, for lack of  members, in the mid or late 2000s. The reasons were various. The biggest reason, or so was my conclusion at the time, can be seen in the thousand-words spoken by the paintbrush of Norman Rockwell, over there &#8212;-&gt;<br \/><span><\/span><br \/><span><\/span> The typical kid born into the 2000s-USA will not identify with that image. It is an &#8220;America&#8221; that Whites associate with the 1950s. That was (and I guess still is) its appeal.<br \/>____________________________________________________________________________________________<br \/>I tried to find numbers. The best I can come up with:<\/p>\n<p><span><font size=\"3\"><strong>2.7 million<\/strong><\/font> : <strong>2011&#8217;s<\/strong> tally for number of boys in the Boy Scouts. [<\/span><a style=\"\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scouting.org\/filestore\/marketing\/pdf\/2011RTNInfographic.pdf\">Official<\/a>, pdf]<br \/><span><font size=\"3\"><strong>3.5 million<\/strong><\/font> :<strong> The 1990s<\/strong> tally, when I was involved.<\/span> [<a style=\"\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allcountries.org\/uscensus\/443_boy_scouts_and_girl_scouts_membership.html\">Apparently official<\/a> \/ excluding &#8220;Learning for Life&#8221; members]\n<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;\">\n<div class=\"paragraph\" style=\"text-align:left;\">In South-Korea, there would be an obvious explanation: A <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Demographics_of_South_Korea#Registered_births_and_deaths.5B9.5D\"> much lower fertility<\/a> rate in the 1990s and especially 2000s, than in the &#8217;80s, i.e. fewer boys  available to join. <em>Not <\/em>in the USA, where the fertility rate has been stable.\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Painting by Norman Rockwell1940s I&#8217;m told that Boy Scout numbers have been on a steady decline for years.
