There is also no &#8220;summer school&#8221;, as we have the in the USA, to make up failed classes.<\/p>\n<p><span><em>What is the incentive to learn, if you will just advance to the next grade no matter what?&#8221;,<\/em> I asked.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span>Two answers were forthcoming: &#8220;Making parents happy&#8221; and &#8220;getting into a good university&#8221;.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span><\/span>I found these answers uncompelling, and it reminds me a lot of what I wrote in <a href=\"http:\/\/yuletide5142.weebly.com\/1\/post\/2013\/06\/post-73-test-prep-and-its-ethical-discontents-or-a-perfect-sat-score-explained.html\">post-73<\/a>.\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was surprised to learn that it is impossible, in South Korea, to &#8220;fail a grade&#8221;.
